I'm sure this list could go on forever but for our purposes I ask your opinions on these frontmen who have either broken up their band or taken hiatus to work on "special stuff" ....

Dave Matthews
Trey Anastasio
David Byrne
Gilmore/waters

Talk about poor timing,Jeff Beck broke up The Jeff Beck Group only weeks before they were supposed to play Woodstock.

ace;
thx - outstanding observations, hit the nail on the Heads. imho.

in the end, one's gotta do what one's gotta do - he not bz being bored is bz tie-dying.
ya can't make an Alabama Getaway 'til you've made a connection at Terrapin Station.

Did Cassidy get too big for the Partridge Family?

By the end, each member ot Thye Jam had their own contingent, and didn't speak directly in public, at the pub.. 3 different cliques with their do's and don'ts.

But yeah, Paul Weller always was in the moment, it's pretty cool he took The Jam as far as it would go without winding up like a package, like Elvis, drugged up to get through the drag of still having to mach schau for the crowds.

Trible-weight, doped up, 150+ gigs a year, until you suffocate from the machinery of pumping the handle, not a goods idea.
Stuck on stupid.

Hee-haw, grist for the mill. another summer's come and gone...

But Crumb, that Crumb - he broke up the Zap gang -no more mr. nice guy... heh heh.
Read the last ish of Zap, the disbelief from the inner circle at Crumb's drawn out confessions of a sixties icon who's grown up... shrug...
that's all folks.

Here and now, boys... here and now (Aldous Huxley's parrots).

Take it with a nasty if not screamingly ott sample of the last issue of Weirdo, aka "Vierdoh"[
in part why R. Crumb had to leave the country quickly a decade ago, jest in case.

He's back, mostly incognito.

Yeah, the Dead - Crumb connection...
you know he did the Cheap Thrills lp cover ( he still regrets not being paid additional royalties after the fact;
the old story.
He also did the Roots of the Grateful Dead lp cover; he did some squirrely bluegrass sschtick of his own, and shared similar tastes as Garcia though I doubt he liked GD music itself.

Love-Haight, and Nesmith leaving the Monkees in mid-tour with out so much as a by your leave... a serious artist, not hungry for monkee shines anymo'...
twas ever thus. justus...

No mention of Robbie Robertson? Some pretty choice things said in that book written by Levon Helm. Maybe sour grapes but Ronnie Hawkins and others said some shit too.

Why Balin? He certainly wrote some wussy songs but he was no wuss when it came to jumping into the crowd and taking on Angels at Altamont.

really? Was it during a tender rendition of Hearts? Just kidding. Here's my favorite Marty Balin moment:

Alaska State Fair 1994, the JEFFERSON Starship playing with original Airplane members Kantner, Balin, and Cassidy which made it definately worth going to me. Anyway between songs Balin goes " I've been hearing a lot about this Matanuska Thunderfuck ( famous local bud ) but haven't seen any. If anyone knows of some please meet me at the side of the backstage area." Right then a bunch of family fairgoers ( this was when you didn't have to pay extra for the shows there ) yanked their kids out of there. Man it was sweet. A nice reminder that the top forty sissy band Starship once started as an UNDERGROUND revolutionary band.

I always thought that poor Syd was the one that deserved all the credit, but then, he did have his demons...

Never really cared for the other two. Though I recognize each had their musical abilities.

Yea, I think Waters is the real asshole of the band. Having said that, he was an integral part that made the band what it was.

It seems many did not like PF after The Wall, most notably The Final Cut. It really is a Roger Waters album, but I like it quite a bit.

Like Led Zepplin, it's hard to say that there was an album by Floyd that WASN"T good.

"I have a bike, you can ride it if you like. It's got a basket, a bell, and pretty things to make it look good. I'd give it to you if I could, but I borrowed it. I know a mouse..." One of my fav Syd Barret songs from Floyd, but the album BARRETT is still my fav "solo" album by him---I paid $22 for it at Waxie Maxies back in '87 or '88, which was pretty expensive for ONE CD back then.

I'll probably take flak for this, but I never liked Dark Side of the Moon. After Ummagumma and Echoes it juat seemed like bubble gum to me. This does get me into a lot of drinking arguments, but isn't that what beer is for ?

Hey snori & tree-ap (& Dire to piss him off! Ha): I ONLY listen to Piper and Saucer...the first two.

Okay with some of the latter stuff, but really, it is ALL Syd for me and Syd influenced (ie, # 2).

Not that that means dick, but there it is...

At least Byrne has good taste in music. I saw him the audience at the Greek in '86. After the show he was on the local radio station that had broadcast the show. The DJ asked what his favorite Dead song was that day. His answer: Stella Blue.

I always ranked T Heads as my fav band of the decade (75-85?)...really, really great stuff. Never saw them live though.

What a trip.

Saw Talking Heads live a few times, Including SPAC where I made a 'bootleg' using a cheap little handheld cassett recorder with a pinhole mic - came out pretty good and I listened to the tape for years. Also saw them at Forest Hills Queens - good times high energy show. Me and some pals snuck into after party and every one was real cool, we didn't get kicked out until the party broke up at around 2 or 3am.
